Sports in Courmayeur

The lifestyle of our time requires that everybody, in a moderate or a intense way, is active at least in one sport. Of course, weekends and holiday stays are the best periods.
For sports, Courmayeur is undoubtedly one of the most suitable resorts of all the Valle d'Aosta. You can do almost everything, except just for some kinds of sports that require special equipment, such as boxing, track cycling and some disciplines of athletics.
As a mountain resort, it is necessary to distinguish between summer sports, winter sports and sports available the all year.

Summer Sports

The side of Mont Blanc, which faces Courmayeur has been named in English "The Sunny Side" for being sunnier than the French one. This fact makes it perfect for the practice of all major summer sports. In particular, those related to the mountain and to nature.
The variety of the territory allows an infinite number of hiking trails of all lengths and difficulties. You can go from simple walks along the bottom of the Val Veny and Val Ferret, to excursions up to the high altitude passes or to huts and bivouacs, accessible even to hikers.
The same thing can be said also about mountaineering, which in the Mont Blanc has its elective terroir. The massif, with its peaks, ridges and icy valleys offers a truly vast range of routes of all difficulty levels. In short, a truly paradise, where you can experience the feeling of being on a sort of another planet.
Fans of rock climbing can enjoy the many walls and crags in the valley or the superb granite towers in the heart of the range, easily accessible by cable car and short approaches on ice. And in case of rain (or cold winter), at the Forum Sport Center in Courmayeur a formidable climbing wall has been set up.

Cycling is at home in Courmayeur. This is due to the numerous streets and little roads that wind around the town and its surroundings. Added to these are the longer ones along the Val Ferret and Val Veny. Going down to Morgex and La Salle it is also possible to grapple with the famous climb to Col San Carlo stage of various editions of the Giro d'Italia.
For the fans of the mountain bike there is plenty of choice. In addition to the numerous trails in the valley, they have at their disposal many of the hiking trails at medium and high altitudes. For example, routes that lead to the Rifugio Elizabetta, Bertone, Bonatti and Elisa. Or the trails that lead to the Col du Grand Ferret and the Col de la Seigne.
Among the typical summer sports practiced in Courmayeur and vicinity we remember riding, running and skyrunning, rafting on the rapids of the Dora, canoeing and canyoning, fishing, paragliding and hang-gliding.
A special speech has to be done for golf. It can practiced on various small pitches of training. But above all, fans can enjoy it on the beautiful 9 hole golf course in Val Ferret, at the foot of the Grandes Jorasses, one of the points of pride in Courmayeur.

Winter sports

The Courmayeur ski resort enjoys excellent snow conditions. This makes it ideal for all types of winter sports. Of course, the favourite ones are especially downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing.
The fans of alpine skiing have access to countless possibilities. First, the vast and beautiful ski resort Checrouit-Val Veny. With its 100 km of slopes, it offers the possibility of donwnhills of all the difficulties with the extra benefit of the unmissable glance over Mont Blanc. Within the reach of those who occasionally like to change, there are also the nearby ski areas of La Thuile, Chamonix and Les Huches, about half an hour away by car or bus. From January to April there are available also many freeride routes, such as the famous crossing of the Vallée Blanche, the Toula glacier and the descent from the testa d'Arp.
Cross-country skiing in Val Ferret has one of its havens. The ring of more than 12 km in length and the countless variations, distributed along the main path, provide an opportunity for everyone from beginners to experts, from practitioners to specialists of the alternate and skated.
The presence of a main valley with two side valleys (Val Ferret and Val Veny) determines the variety of terroir suitable for other winter sports such as ski mountaineering, hiking with snowshoes, ice falls climbing and sleddog (dogs pulling sleds on snow tracks). As far as indoor sports are concerned, we provide detailed information in the next section, dedicated to sports on offer throughout the year.

The opening of Courmayeur Forum Sport Center has offered great possibilities. Inside are set up appropriate spaces, which allow you to practice various sports throughout the year. We remember the ice rink, for skating, hockey and curling. The tennis and indoor squash courts. The basketball and soccer courts. The climbing wall and halls for gymnastic activities. Of course you can not miss the swimming pool and the mini golf playgrounds.
